Falls

These are some simple tips that can help prevent slips, trips and falls
• Try to keep all the items you need on a daily basis between the height of your shoulder and hip. This will      minimise the risk of you over reaching and bending which can cause you to lose your balance.
• Sit down to carry out tasks where you need good balance, like putting on shoes and socks, having a wash, or getting dressed.
• Think carefully before doing any hazardous tasks e.g. standing on a chair to change a light bulb, if possible get someone else to do it for you.
• Do tasks little and often, rather than in long bursts of activity followed by feelings of fatigue, tiredness and stiffness.
• Try not to stand for long periods of time, for example while waiting for the kettle to boil.
• When getting out of bed, sit on the side of the bed for about 1 minute before you stand up, wiggle your toes or “pump” your feet if you can. This helps to stabilise your blood pressure before you stand up.
• When standing up from your chair, stand still for a few moments (try counting to 5) get your balance and then move.
• Where possible, remove tripping hazards like rugs and flexes and clutter from the floor.
• Have furniture arranged in a way that you can move about easily; make sure that the floors and stairs are free of clutter.
