Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It! programme (MEND)
Health has always been high on the agenda in Rushcliffe. Recent data from the National Child Measurement programme has shown that around 29% of all 10 year olds in Rushcliffe are classed as obese.
We’ve decided to tackle this problem with help from Nottingham Rugby Club. The Try It – A Conversion for Life programme is a project of two halves.
The first half consists of the MEND programme – Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It! This nationally run programme is a fun course for children whose weight is above the healthy range for their age and height, along with their parent/guardian. It runs twice a week after school in two-hour sessions over 10 weeks.
During these ten weeks each child will have their own ‘Rugby Buddy’. This player will follow the child’s progress, motivate them and be an active role-model in making lifestyle changes. And best of all its free!
The programme helps children and families manage their weight better and lead healthier lives. With the support of their parents or carers, children learn how to improve their health, fitness and the way they feel about their bodies.
It teaches them about nutrition, how to eat a balanced diet and how to lead a more active life. The programme helps families make changes gradually so they can stick to their new healthy lifestyle and change their attitudes towards food and exercise so they can feel fitter, healthier and happier – for good.
The second half of the programme – A Conversion for Life, aims to get families involved in various activities at Nottingham Rugby Club’s training ground, building links with the club to try and ensure that this is a change for life.
Many overweight children are bullied or lack self esteem. The rugby players will take the children back into their schools and will lead tag rugby sessions. The children can show their new, iconic friend to their peers and take the lead in a physical activity session, where previously they may have felt isolated.
